Between pitches, mentoring & networking - What did our BRYCK Startup Sprinters achieve?
14.07.2022
4 startups united behind the mission of changing the future sustainably. Supported by 4 experts and 3 mentors, the teams literally SPRINTED through these 10 weeks of our BRYCK startup program to work on their innovative solutions.
During 3 intense on-site attendance days, the startups took their pitches and performances to the next level, But the main work happened in 1:1 sessions between the teams & their dedicated experts and mentors, working constantly on their individual challenges, they had specifically set themselves in advance.
What have the startups achieved? How did they deal with fuckups? What else did they take away from the program? And where do they go from here? Check out in this blog!
FRONYX GmbH
Fronyx wants to fundamentally improve the attractiveness and acceptance of e-mobility in society. They have discovered the pain point at the other end of an electric vehicle - the charging station and energy procurement. With their products, so called AI-as-a-Service, they want to support mobility and energy companies to improve the charging comfort at public charging stations and to make the operation of the infrastructure more efficient and sustainable.

What have they achieved during the BRYCK 10-week sprint program?
Challenge: Close pilot customer for product "Demand"
“We lacked specific domain knowledge from the energy sector and your mentors and experts helped us a lot to find the right persons to talk to” says Mike Wiemann. “The program is ideal to challenge the assumptions startups have about their market & customers.”
Their industry mentor, Daniel Lunter from Tengelmann Energy adds: “While exploring the industry customer´s needs we learned, that one of the problems which fronyx is trying to solve, is not a big deal yet. But in the process of trying to figure out how their service can help, they found a slightly different use case, which is actually more relevant at the moment.”
Challenge: Design company funding strategy
“At the last program item of the Sprint, the BRYCK Pitch Day, we achieved our last goal: we received very good feedback and interest from potential investors. The work with BRYCK was essential for us to build a funding strategy due to in depth understanding of what investors are looking for, what kind of questions they have / would like to get answered and how to communicate them. Our key take-away: We need to tell a big story and share this vision with more confidence.”
How fronyx contributes to a livable future:
“Their services have the potential to smoothen the fusion of e-mobility and the energy industry and accelerate the adoption of e-mobility through that”, says Daniel Lunter.

GreenOcean
GreenOcean is tackling one of the biggest challenges: Water scarcity. The global water situation is alarming: water demand is projected to exceed supply by 40% by 2030. Combined with a dramatic lack of wastewater reuse, currently at only 2.4%, the world is heading for a global water crisis. Although more than two-thirds of our planet is covered with water, less than three per cent of it is potable! For GreenOcean, innovation and technology are the key to sustainable solutions to economic and environmental challenges, such as resource efficiency: "GreenOcean's technologies transform wastewater disposal into reuse and close the water cycle" says Peter Muth, founder of GreenOcean.

Let's take a closer look at GreenOcean's goals and challenges:
Challenge: Open channels to introduce lighthouse projects and TaaS (Treatment-as-a-Service)
“We have opened many channels and received very positive feedback that our message has "clicked" in the minds of our target audience. Together with our mentor, experts and the BRYCK ecosystem, we have created a longlist of promising launches that we will follow up on.”
Challenge: Facilitate entry into our complex topic of chemical processing and wastewater
“For us it was really difficult to understand the view and what the other side of the table receives from what we try to send – often being confronted for the 1st time with our complex topics (chemistry, industrial wastewater). We had also to understand skepticism of wastewater experts, when contacted with our solutions.” Peter Muth recalls: “Our mentor Laura Kohler, business mentor and sustainability expert, and Sven Lyko, our expert in Watermangement and Process Engineering opened our eyes and minds. Thanks to them, we were able to understand the different associations, thoughts, and questions a person gets when they first meet our offer and our mission. In response, they offered us some solutions directly afterwards and helped us to establish contacts in their network.”
Sven Lyko added: “We worked really hard on getting a better understanding on how the idea/product of Green Ocean fits into the industrial wastewater treatment market. As well we created some convincing arguments to communicate the concept of Green Ocean to different groups of stakeholders effectively.
Lyko hopes for the future that GreenOcean will be used to its full extent in the two different industries chemicals and paper:
"Every single Green Ocean plant reduces surface water pollution. This makes industrial production in the Ruhr area more sustainable. That means good jobs in a good aquatic environment and - a future worth living."

This is how they got closer to their goals during the program:
Challenge: Networking with customers and investors
“We have always been able to gain really good contacts with the help of the BRYCK team. The housewarming event in particular stood out! Here we had numerous exciting conversations with potential customers, that still resonate today. There were also some good discussions with interested investors at the Investors Day at the end of the sprint” Janik Seitzer, founder of Sustayn, tells us.
Challenge: From nice to have to must have
“With our mentor Laura Kohler and Marvin Tekauschitz, enterprise sales and marketing expert, we were able to work out the next steps to go from "nice to have to must have": This allowed us to see more clearly where we are right now and what we need to develop further. Starting with what added value we offer our customers and where we want to start to pick up our customer exactly where we are an indispensable tool. In addition, we were able to work out how we can be used as a measuring instrument where classic CO2 balancing instruments are not effective."
Laura Kohler makes a prognosis for the future of the now 13-member team:
“I can imagine Sustayn will become the leading one-stop-shop application for the company-wide sustainability strategy, the strategy implementation, employee sustainability as well as sustainability monitoring and reporting in companies.”

Challenge: Industrial progress, networking and acquiring first customers
“From the three strategic goals we set up at the beginning of the sprint, we were able to achieve two of them! Also, we are very close to achieving our last goal: acquiring our first three customers.” Patrick Imcke, founder of YEAI, tells. “The most important takeaways in the program for our company was the expert advice and training, that enabled us to overcome specific industry challenges we faced. Additionally, we are happy to have met many interesting people that we will stay in contact with after the sprint is over!”
Partick Imcke summarised: “The Sprint program was the perfect stepping stone for us and gave us the support and advice we needed at this stage of our startup. We were positively surprised by the absolutely diverse selection of workshops and training sessions, which were tailored to our needs as we needed them.”
Peter Christian Zinn, expert of the team for Data Science & Data-driven Business Models, sees great potential in the start-up in the future:
"The use of artificial intelligence in everyday business for a variety of professions is a big step towards levelling the playing field in the market. With their software, even small tradespeople or shop owners can use AI for their business, which today is only affordable for larger companies."
